Pequossette CIT Program
We are excited to share that the format of our Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Program at Pequossette Summer Program will be changing beginning in Summer 2026.
In past years, individuals entering 9th grade (typically 14 years old) were hired as paid junior staff members. Moving forward, this age group will now participate as volunteer CITs rather than paid employees. This updated format allows us to provide a true leadership-development experience focused on learning, mentorship, and service.
What’s Changing?
• No paid positions under age 15: Starting Summer 2026, Watertown Recreation will no longer hire staff members younger than 15 years old as of the first day of the program.
• CITs will be volunteers, not employees: Participants will not receive wages but will earn community service hours that may be used toward school or graduation requirements.
• Focus on training and leadership development: CITs will assist counselors, work with program registrants, and learn essential skills in responsibility, communication, teamwork, and childcare in a supportive environment.
• No program fee: There will be no cost to participate in the CIT program.
Why the Change?
Shifting to a volunteer-based CIT model allows us to:
• Create a structured learning experience rather than immediate employment.
• Provide time for growth, training, and observation before assuming the responsibilities of a paid staff role.
• Ensure that all hired staff meet the minimum age of 15 by the start of the program, in alignment with camp guidelines and best practices for youth employment.
CITs who complete the program successfully will gain valuable experience and receive priority consideration for paid counselor positions in future summers, once they meet the minimum age requirement.
